CASIOPEA - Take Me (Keyboard Cover)
I’m a classically trained pianist but I’ve been enjoying a lot of CASIOPEA as of recent, so I decided to try my hand at some jazz piano. It’s not perfect, but I feel pretty good about it!

Rhythm X 2024 Synth 1 - Learn the Music (Joey Krachenfels)

I did this with Bluecoats 2022, so I figured I might as well continue the tradition. I wrote out the music that were originally written out alongside some changes that we made throughout the season. Super grateful to have been given the responsibility of maintaining and performing this monster of a synth book. By far, the best part I've ever played in my marching career. It came with its challe...
WGI PIW 2024 Synth + "Non-Percussion Instrument" Compilation

Everyone is doing fun little compilations/mega-cuts of instrument-specific WGI moments so here's my contribution: A cut of the majority of the electronic/non-percussion instrument moments from the top 15 PIW shows this past season. I tried to include mostly moments where it was a prominent moment/solo-esque feature rather than just the click of a button for a sample. I'll leave some timestamps ...

April 19th, 2024 (Semi-Finals Day) recorded at 10:09 PM. Camp Chautauqua, Miamisburg, OH The best synth book I’ve ever played. The best front ensemble I’ve ever been in. The best thing I’ve ever done. Getting to play a note-for-note excerpt of a REALLY difficult Brad Mehldau tune is something that I will never forget. Major shoutout to the percussion staff for taking a chance in me and providin...

Bluecoats 2022 Synth 1 - Learn the Music

I figured that I would give something like this a try. I've only ever seen one other synth video that shows the sheet music before, so it's time to bring it out to the forefront a little more! You'll find the music written in the top right corner along with some little notes about what kind of patch I used during that segment! I hope you guys enjoy! 6W! 💙🍁

You and the xylo were so clean that it looked like you were playing his part.
That’s what happens when you’re next to the greatest Xylogod of all time!
i tried to transcribe the solo cause i just loved it and for the life of me i couldn’t do it so thank you so much for this 🙏🙏🙏
There was free sheet music for the original piece online, but it seems to be gone now. I do have the original pdf on this google drive link if you still wanna check it out though! drive.google.com/file/d/1K7si9qVdtnSGw-moPb68J6QMmhRYxvIz/view?usp=drivesdk
I thought I liked the synth stuff with my show that year 🤣 WGI is always the best
how are you changing patches? just curious. Awesome video!
The synth performer next to me, Erin, was the one that ran Mainstage. (serious 🐐. Go check out her Crown cam from this past DCI season as well as her cam from this season!) She used the bottom two keys on her synth to change patches for both of us at the same time since both of our synths were linked to the same Mainstage file.
was united audio not syncing with vid just my vid or was it like that for everyone using flo lol. currently reuploading vid where i manually synced the audio
From what I’ve heard it was a Flo issue?? Not exactly sure
That Cap City synth solo was so beautiful. I love it when great synth players are featured.
Being a synth player is great, highly recommend. Also, the fact that bro went to play saxophone like 10 seconds later is crazy.
What does this mean
9 days later, I still don’t know
Love the crisp Ben audio, as a matter of fact this is really clean audio of the battery as well - did you do anything special to this audio before uploading cause this sounds crazy crisp? Good stuff
Lmao nope. I think this is literally just audio straight from my phone with “stereo sound” having already been turned on in the settings. Not sure if that’s a default setting or not tho.
4:00 was that a real blindfold or a blindfold but you can still see though it blindfold? If it's real blindfold, that's some mad muscle memory.
It was a “blindfold but you can still see through it blindfold” BUT it did make it a little more difficult to see through since it was textured cloth/fabric/whatever.
Never heard of this event, nor seen this style of performance. But bloody hell. Thanks for sharing bro. YT algorithm starting to send me fresh vids like this 🙂♥️
Very cool! 👍
Thank you for this resource!
Do you like have a contract or something in blue coats or do you just stay and leave whenever?
all DCI groups in general use contracts
Y’all get a shield to keep you from the elements? That’s crazy they just have the sun beaming down on the front ensemble at my school.
Do you play everything by memory or do you look at your music during the show?
memory
Is it confusing to work with that keyboard? I play a more basic synthesizer with a cart and speaker and it has dozens of buttons and I don’t know what half of them do but the synthesizers I see in the cams always have so many buttons and computers. Do you have to like click the computer screen or something while you’re playing? And do you got to do like sound changes and adjustments while playing or do you like barely touch buttons that aren’t like sound buttons? What are the computers for? Our band has Malik carts, and they use iPads, but I don’t really see them touching them at all, and they only really touch the buttons on their stations. Is it like that for you or do you have to be programming computers while playing
What’s Blue coats? I constantly see people recording cams and stuff. Where is it located? Also, did you audition for synthesizer or were you put there because it best fit the ensemble?
it’s an ensemble called a drum corps. the bluecoats are from canton, OH! i auditioned specifically for synth
@@RealJoey oh
@@RealJoey I never thought that synth roles were chosen lol I just thought that people usually only used since when there was a need for them and chose the best piano players from the band to play at least that’s what they do in my van and that’s what I’m synth
Thank you for putting some love on underrated instruments like the synthesizer
As a synth player in wgi, I love seeing a synth cam with the music and everything with it. so cool! Very well done. I'm going to do a synth cam when we go to States next month, but I'll have to use my phone, since I don't have a camera or go-pro to use
Could you give a pdf of the music?
Fun fact we are transcribing this song
What controls when the sound the synth makes changes? love this video
He said he uses a pedal to change sounds
thanks!@@blackqweenmars
Now i just need to learn how to read piano sheet music
It’s easy
Are you switching patches with a hand off camera, or are they automatic/controlled by someone else? Curious! Love this stuff, synth was my first thing I ever did in indoor percussion!
I switched patches using a pedal! I had the sustain pedal on my right and then I had a second pedal on my left that we programmed to switch patches in MainStage!
@@RealJoey That's very useful actually. I bet it's not hard too, as you can have midi controlled functions in mainstage which I LOVE.
@@RealJoeyWhen I play synth I have to use the midi pads on the synth to switch, pads, so I wised I had something as convenient as a second pedal.
W performance, love how youre not just standing still, while playing synth, thats a skill I need to work on, huge props to you bro
I freaking love synth cams and I will now love you forever for providing sheet music that is so awesome!
Thanks joey
You're welcome Blaster vlogs
I was wondering all season how that trumpet loop time modulation worked. SKILL
Everything I wanted, and more...the man included the names of the patches, what a LEGEND! I assume the "Taming the Dragon" pad was custom made for the show? I noticed that your part mirrored that found in the song, but I had no idea that the patch itself was also custom-catered to it. And why did the sample leading into part 3 (4:48)--as awesome as it is--need to be split where you had to press 2 keys?
The Taming the Dragon patch was actually a synthetic patch that we found in either Mainstage, Omnisphere, or Alchemy. Throughout the season, we toyed around with the patch until we got as close as we could’ve to the original source/song because it sounded nothing like it at first. We did the same thing with the “no attack piano” patch in the beginning of The Garden! When it came to the samples at the end of Part 2, we originally only had the first patch, but it was really hard to time that with the entrance of the battery on its own, so we added a second sample to make the transition into the battery/voice feature a bit more seamless
@@RealJoey Oh wow! I'm primarily a marimba player with just an interest in the electronic side in shows, and normally what goes on behind the black box is just that. It's really cool that it sounds like you were able to have some input in finding and toying around with a patch until it sounds right, makes it feel really integrated as a performer I'd imagine. This is wonderful insight, thanks again!
No fucking way!!!! TY!!! If only I had the synth 2 sheet and the mainstage file, I would go nuts!!
I forgot that you actually play music
Honestly, me too. What did I even do for 3 months?
How hard is it to get into synth for bloo?
It kinda depends. I’ve been playing piano for about 10 years now and it wasn’t that bad to read the exercises. The hardest part was fitting in with the rest of the ensemble during audition camps.
@@RealJoey how old were you when you started piano? I played for a few years when I was younger but I haven't played in years and when I graduate I want to play synth for a corp. Is the music difficult?
@@SJdrumz I started when I was either 10 or 11 years old. The music that I got wasn't too difficult to begin with, as it was a "placeholder" part that the electronics coordinator and I rewrote throughout the season. By the end of the season, the music was enough of a challenge without being too uncomfortable
RILEY!
Synth buddy of all time
Bloo Synth is the most captivating thing to me, I swear...and you absolutely nailed it my dude. It almost feels wrong to say that some of the biggest earworms for me are stuff like the pre-show audio, the sample at 6:10, and the textures of the patches you play (like 7:12, and 7:35, which I think is an accordion...? and the Electric Counterpoint bit in the BoBP lot tune), since it feels to me like a disservice to all of the performers on the field if I say that...but I guess there's a talented team of audio engineers making sure those sounds give it that quality that's unmistakably Bluecoats. And a fantastic performer to pull it off as well! (I also stan your part under the keytar section, so dream-like and energetic all at once)
Yeah making all of the patches fit in took a lot of time throughout the season to get it to feel perfect lmao. Thank you so much man!! I really appreciate it!!
bro has immaculate grooving
This was really cool to watch! I'm planning on auditioning for synth at Blue coats (and possible another corps) this season. Do you have any tips that might help prepare me?
Sorry that this is late haha. Definitely get your hands on audition packets as soon as possible and start working on the exercises. Build up the tempos gradually and do what you are most comfortable with. Depending on the audition requirements, look for a solo that best shows your playing abilities. For reference, I'm using a piece by Sibelius for the upcoming camp. Overall, just bring a friendly and positive mindset for the audition camps! Let me know if you have any other specific questions!
How do you like the Keylab MkII keybed?
It was really nice to play on!! The keys were heavier compared to what I was expecting, but it felt somewhat like an actual grand piano. My only complaint would be the pads on the left side of the keyboard... they got very finnicky as the season went on.
How many synth spots will there be in '23?
There will be one spot open!
@@RealJoeyy’all only got one synth?
@@blackqweenmars nah. i was returning and then there was one more spot, making two spots
How am i just now seeing this this is so dope Great looking cart
yeah but do you got games on the computer?
lmao
i’ll get talking ben on there next time 😤
funny seeing you here
@@borj_1 oh my goodness is that jackson hall
I've always wondered how the narration is played, like is it pre-timed or is each segment of the narration recorded separately and a front ensemble member 'plays' each segment in time?
The narration was spliced into separate samples. The other synth player, Riley, triggered those samples at specific times throughout the show so that it could line up with certain musical moments, such as the “Are you gonna say something to that guy” sample with the battery.
@@RealJoey Ah very cool. Great work this season!
@@RealJoey so are there other major differences by how the 1st and 2nd parts are written outside of the narraration?
@@dizdawgjr34 It's mostly just musical moments that fit in with the narration, such as in the beginning of the Nautilus movement with the first loud bass note that lines up with the "It got my blood boiling" line.
@@RealJoey where did they get the audio samples or did they record them there selfs
I love your part at 8:14, so ethereal
this is the most joey post of all time
